Mar y Sol, "Maudie", or Sea and Sun as she is known to her friends and family, received her bachelor of science in nutrition from Texas State University. She worked in public health for many years and decided she needed to learn more about breastfeeding; "It is after all, one of our first and most healthy foods," she says. That coupled with the fact that she would be asked several times a day what to do about a difficult latch or not enough milk supply and it was decided; she began taking more courses and attending several conferences to learn about it. In December of 2016 she received the good news that she had passed her IBCLC exam. An IBCLC is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, which is the highest standard in the industry.

Maudie began Mermaid Mamas to create a safe space for mothers and their families to be themselves and get the care they need to live the best possible life during the wonderful transition of parenthood. She wanted to make sure that no mother would ever feel judged, and that all her breastfeeding, childcare, and nutrition questions could be answered whether in the comfort of their own homes or Maudie's little home office.

Maudie is a huge advocate of love. She says,"It doesn't matter whether someone is gay, straight, formula feeding, suppressing, or exclusively breastfeeding. Love is love, and we need more of it in this world."
